This series removes the face from its usual central role. The poses remain familiar, while silhouette, backlighting, and deep shadow limit the information the image gives about the person. 

Occasionally, an eye or a piece of jewelry breaks through the shadow, a small detail where the light still finds something to catch.

In my abstract photography, recognizable reality can be reduced without disappearing completely.

Here I apply the same principle to portraiture, using light to determine how much of the person is visible while keeping the image a portrait, not a study in shadow.
